Practice Mediocre Magic

My favorite artist, Derek Vincent Smith, gets flack for when he jumps on the mic to freestyle by those who just don’t get it. This one hits home as I have heard similar things because I love to rap but I’m not very good at it. But its not about being good, its about having a good time, its about soul soothing. And one must practice mediocre magic to be able to create magnificent magic. Merlin wasn’t merlin on day one. And even if you never get to be merlin, or create a piece on the level of a Mona Lisa or whatever it is, as long as the process was soothing to the soul, the true purpose was found, regardless of the end result.

I, although still not good, am way better than first time I rapped.. and D is showing mad progress, yall haters.

I cannot stress enough how important practicing the magic is when it comes to soothing your soul.

The concept of Mediocre, to me doesn’t necessarily mean bad either. I feel we lose appreciation for the mundane, everyday things, we lose our awe for such things and consider them mediocre, but that doesn’t make them any less magical.

If you don’t think you are creative, I highly recommend the book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being, by Rick Rubin.
